I have had the privilege of developing numerous products that incorporate the remarkable potential of L-Theanine.
L-Theanine has been a central ingredient in my formulations, from study formulas aimed at enhancing cognitive function and focus, to stress management solutions designed to promote relaxation, and sleep formulas crafted to support restful sleep.
Let’s take a look at L-Theanine and what it does.
What is L-Theanine?
L-Theanine, chemically known as γ-glutamylethylamide, is an amino acid that is primarily found in tea leaves, particularly in green tea (Camellia sinensis).
L-Theanine is a non protein amino acid. This means that it is not used in the synthesis of proteins in living things. You cannot get L-Theanine from eating protein foods.
L-Theanine was first isolated in 1949 by Japanese scientists and has since gained recognition for its unique properties.
L-Theanine is structurally similar to glutamate, a neurotransmitter in the brain, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that promotes relaxation.
The relaxing properties of tea are largely thanks to the presence of L-Theanine.

Natural and supplement sources of L-Theanine
An average cup of tea contains about 20-50mg of L-Theanine.
The content of L-Theanine depends on:
- The type of tea (green tea tends to have more L-Theanine)
- The growing conditions of the tea as well as the processing methods.
- The tea preparation method (steeping for longer times in hot water can extract more L-Theanine from the tea leaves).
While tea is a natural source of L-Theanine, if you are looking for higher doses of L-Theanine, it is also available as a stand-alone supplement in capsule or powder form, allowing for more precise dosing.
And if you use my supplements you’ll also get additional ingredients that work synergistically with L-Theanine for an even better effect!

Calming Effects, Stress Reduction and mental performance benefits
One of the key attributes of L-Theanine is its ability to induce a state of relaxation without causing drowsiness.
Research suggests that L-Theanine increases alpha brain wave activity, which is associated with a relaxed yet alert mental state.
By promoting alpha wave production, L-Theanine helps alleviate stress, anxiety, and promotes a sense of tranquility.

Moreover, L-Theanine has been found to modulate levels of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, and GABA, which contribute to mood regulation and relaxation.

These effects contribute to increased attention, focus, and mental clarity which facilitate better cognitive performance and information processing.
Through its various mechanisms, L-Theanine demonstrates its potential as a valuable cognitive enhancer, offering individuals a natural and effective way to optimise their mental abilities.
Promoting Sleep Quality
Sleep is a vital aspect of maintaining overall well-being, and L-Theanine may offer benefits in this area as well.
By promoting relaxation and reducing anxiety, L-Theanine can potentially aid in improving sleep quality.
Research has shown that L-Theanine can help individuals fall asleep faster, reduce nighttime wakefulness, and enhance the overall quality of sleep.
These effects make L-Theanine an attractive option for individuals struggling with sleep-related issues.
L-Theanine and energy
While it is not typically considered an energy-boosting supplement in the same way as caffeine, it can have some effects on alertness and cognitive function when it is paired with caffeine.
This combination is thought to provide a smoother, more sustained energy boost compared to caffeine alone. Theanine may help mitigate some of the negative side effects of caffeine, such as anxiety or increased heart rate. I have been relying on this synergy in the preworkout formulations that I create for nearly a decade. My formulas were among the first to exploit this synergy.
However, I came across the benefits of the caffeine-theanine combo more than 20 years ago when I was relying on strong coffee and green tea before my gym sessions (you can read more about this in my article below).
Concluding thoughts
This article has highlighted the diverse range of benefits associated with L-Theanine and the versatility of this ingredient. Future articles will delve into the synergies between L-Theanine and other ingredients, illustrating how these combinations are strategically capitalised upon when I design supplements. These synergies, carefully incorporated into formulations, underlie the efficacy of the supplements that I create.
