Maltodextrin: Its Function and Benefits in Supplements

If you’re a regular supplement user, you’ve probably seen maltodextrin listed on the labels of various products. However, you may be wondering what it actually is, how it works, and whether it’s safe to consume.

I formulate products with maltodextrin, have done and published university-based research effects on its effects on genetic function, regularly go to factories making maltodextrin, walk in storerooms of maltodextrin, unload bags of maltodextrin from trucks and carry them on my shoulders. Maltodextrin and I have a long histo

Today I will write about Maltodextrin, elaborate on its scientific aspects, its uses in supplements, and potential benefits and drawbacks to help you make informed decisions when selecting supplements and other health products.

How is Maltodextrin made?

Maltodextrin is produced from starch, a plant-based carbohydrate.

This starch can be obtained from maize, rice, potato or tapioca. But it is most commonly extracted from maize due to the latter’s widespread availability.

The starch is then processed through hydrolysis, which breaks down the long chains of glucose molecules into shorter chains. The resulting product, Maltodextrin, is a white, tasteless powder that is easily soluble in water.

Maltodextrin consists of glucose molecules and is thus a source of glucose for the body.

Maltodextrin is a highly versatile ingredient that has many uses in the food and supplement industry.

It is commonly used as a carbohydrate source, filler or bulking agent in various powdered supplements, including

  • Protein powders
  • Pre-workouts
  • Weight gainers.
  • Sports drinks and other energy drinks.

Why is Maltodextrin used?

Maltodextrin is an ideal ingredient for supplements and sports drinks due to its high glycemic index. This means that it is quickly digested and absorbed into the bloodstream, providing a rapid source of energy to the body.

This makes it particularly useful for athletes and bodybuilders who need to fuel their workouts or recover quickly after intense physical activity.

Another benefit of maltodextrin is that it is easily digestible and does not cause gastrointestinal distress, as can be the case with some other carbohydrate sources. This makes it a popular choice for individuals with sensitive stomachs or digestive issues.

How I use Maltodextrin in formulations

Mass Gainer Powders

I use maltodextrin as a carb source in mass/ weight gainer powders due to its high glycemic index and rapid absorption.

I also use other carbohydrate sources like the low-GI Palatinose so that a more sustained energy release profile is achieved, which can be beneficial for individuals looking to increase their calorie intake and fuel their workouts.

However, it is important to note that consuming too much maltodextrin can lead to excessive weight gain and should be used in moderation.

That is why I use a balanced ratio of maltodextrin to other carb sources, as well as a balanced ratio of total carbs to protein in my formulations.

Recovery Shakes

I include Maltodextrin in recovery shakes to provide a rapid source of glucose to replenish glycogen stores in muscles.

Consuming maltodextrin in a recovery shake also creates an insulin spike that can help to promote muscle recovery by stimulating muscle protein synthesis.

Maltodextrin’s easiness on the stomach also makes it a desirable carbohydrate compared to pure glucose (dextrose).

Sports Drinks

Sports drinks are designed to provide the body with a quick source of energy and hydration during physical activity.

Maltodextrin is commonly used in sports drinks due to its high glycemic index and rapid absorption.

Consuming maltodextrin in a sports drink can help to maintain blood sugar levels during exercise and provide a quick source of energy to the body.

Additionally, maltodextrin is easily digestible and does not cause gastrointestinal distress, making it a popular choice for athletes and active individuals.

Cognitive Booster Drinks

Glucose is the primary source of energy for the brain and is essential for optimal cognitive function.

Maltodextrin is a source of glucose and is sometimes used in cognitive booster drinks to promote mental clarity and focus.

Consuming maltodextrin can provide the brain with a quick source of energy, which can be beneficial for individuals looking to improve their cognitive performance.

However, it is important to note that consuming too much maltodextrin can lead to a rapid rise and fall in blood sugar levels, which can have a negative impact on cognitive function.
